“Summer Camp for Big Kids” kicks off Soulstice’s “I Heart Racing” series

The I Heart Racing series has launched with the publication of Summer Camp for Big Kids: TransRockies Run, now available as that beloved stage race gets underway August 12.

Billed as “tales of triumph, hope, and friendship from the mountains of Colorado,” the book presents stories of more than thirty TRR participants, plus images from talented photographers that showcase the up-close and personal as well as the vast, inspiring terrain of more than 120 miles that TRR “campers” traverse over six days every year.

For nearly two decades, runners have shown their grit (and occasionally their wild sides) by challenging themselves to an elevated experience in the Colorado mountains. From Buena Vista to Beaver Creek, over Hope Pass and taking in some well-deserved rest and relaxation in ChillVille, TransRockies tests limits while ensuring camaraderie and unwavering support with a newfound family.

Who says you have to leave summer camp behind just because you’re an adult? Come for the outdoors and the exercise; stay for the life-changing memories and perspectives. TRR—and this book—contain them all.

“It’s a glimpse into the ups and downs, challenges, triumphs, vulnerabilities, breakthroughs, breakdowns, and characters that make this a transformational event for so many,” writes editor Luke Marshall in the introduction. “Summer Camp for Big Kids is a peek behind the curtain of the race itself that reveals an extraordinary history, evolution, and culture best expressed by the runners, volunteers, friends, family members, and crew who have shaped it.”

The book is the first book in the I Heart Racing series, launched by Soulstice Publishing to celebrate the nation’s most historic, quirky, and tradition-rich footraces. These events motivate people to lace up their shoes for a million different reasons and take part in healthy, fun, challenging exercise with a community of connection.

Each book even includes a bumper sticker so readers can show their love of the race.

I Heart Racing gives runners the opportunity to share what their favorite destinations and events mean to them. These beautiful keepsake books remind us of the miles we cover and the blood, sweat, tears, and smiles so many of us expend on our running journeys.

The series was inspired by Soulstice’s 2019 book To Imogene, a Flagstaff Love Letter, edited by Soulstice co-founders Myles Schrag and Julie Hammonds. The book, which was a top-three finalist in the Independent Book Publishers Association’s annual awards, was billed as “one town’s long-distance romance with an iconic trail run.” That collection of essays, poems, quips, photos, and more was proof of the creativity and commitment of runners who want to express their love for the sport.

“Soulstice was thrilled to work with TRR president Aaron McConnell and book editor Luke Marshall in bringing the powerful stories and beautiful photos of that amazing race to life,” Schrag said. “TRR deserves to be celebrated, as do the future books we choose to include in this memorable series. In more ways than one, heart is essential to runners pursuing their passion.”
